I only had sandpaper up to 600 grit. I want to get up to 1500 and 2000. Still, I’m not unhappy. I used

Looking good. Did you do it by hand?

Thanks! Yeah, all by hand. I don’t have any power sanders or a bench grinder. I had 220, 320, 400, and 600. (I thought I was buying a pack with 220-1500, but I apparently was not.) I did a dry, then a wet sand with each grit, and finished it with Blue Magic polish.
It was actually pretty relaxing. I was listening to a book, just scrubbing away. Therapy, perhaps?
I had to reuse the old grommets when I put it back on, because I couldn’t figure out how to get the new ones on Honda’s flared valve cover bolts. So I’ll have it off again soon, and I’ll hit it with finer sandpaper until it rides eternal through the gates of Valhalla, shiny and chrome. Er, aluminum.

I imagine it was quite cathartic to complete but my hand is cramping just thinking about it. I’d invest in a rotary tool and polishing kit.

So purdy :)

It looks good, and a polishing wheel will make your life so much easier. I did 2 bumpers with the same method, and it was a pain. But they ended up looking great.

Yeah, I’ll probably get one before the next go. I just didn’t want to spend any more money.

I miss my Civic, but the insurance on it was ridiculous for what it was ($10/mo cheaper than my ‘05 V6 Mustang). It was so well put together, and quiet, and comfy, and you could beat RELENTLESSLY on the D16Y7 and it would give zero fucks. 32mpg wasn’t bad, either.

Mine isn’t bad. I think I pay about $48/month, minimal coverage.

Is there a way to clear coat it or something to keep it from looking like a 1990's beater engine again?

a lick of high temp black on your exhaust heat shield will help make that nice shiny cover stand out!

Yes. The guy from the thread sprayed his with clear engine enamel to finish it off. I didn’t yet, because I need to get it shinier, but I plan to.

A fine idea. I think I even have some at home. I’m planning to eventually get a performance header, which will be nice and shiny, but until then I should paint that cover.

I have a performance header on my b16, I still have the heat shield ontop because it looks tidy
painted mine :D

But shiny pipes! I’m such a hypocrite. I don’t like brightwork on the outside. I want to black out my grille surround and door trim, even. But if it’s shiny under the hood, I swoon. Weird.

mmm, but then they get all pretty colours! which is fun too
